This is an intentionally open-ended question. I am anticipating all sorts of responses, and I want to encourage you to think creatively and to respond honestly. Here we go!
Blog Question #1: Why do we (people in general or you specifically) read and write? Feel free to do research or use some of your favorite authors' quotations as examples of your reasoning.
As you consider the question above, I thought you may enjoy this Calvin and Hobbes comic strip I found:

Watterson, Bill. Calvin and Hobbes. http://www.blogut.ca/2008/10/24/interested-in-a-career-in-writing/. (5 August 2010).

"Did you ever when you were little, endure your parents' warnings, then wait for them to leave the room, pry loose protective covers and consider inserting some metal object into an electrical outlet?
Did you wonder if for once you might light up the room?
When you were big enough to cross the street on your own, did you ever wait for a signal, hear the frenzied approach of a fire truck and feel like stepping out in front of it?
Did you wonder just how far that rocket ride might take you?
When you were almost grown, did you ever sit in a bubble bath, persperation pooling, notice a blow-dryer plugged in within easy reach, and think about dropping it into the water?
Did you wonder if the expected rush might somehow fail you?
And now, do you ever dangle your toes over the precipice, dare the cliff to crumble, defy the frozen deity to suffer the sun, thaw feather and bone, take wing to fly home?
I, Pattyn Scarlet Von Stratten, do."
I'm not much of a writer but I read because it's like when you read books you can really get to know the character. With just this quote you learn a lot about the character and the way she thinks. That makes it easy to get into the book and feel like you are a part of it. With books you really can go anywhere you want to go.
H.Bennett 4blue
H. Bennett’s response to the first blog question was very interesting. I liked H. Bennett’s reasons for reading: to meet personalities you may never get the chance to encounter, to become part of something extraordinary, and to travel to worlds completely different from ours. I thought H. Bennett’s reasons for reading were great but typical. In no way is that meant to insult H. Bennett.I just think it is fairly obvious that most people read to gain knowledge and/or to entertain themselves. I also recognize that most people write to educate and/or to entertain others. I challenge H. Bennett to think about reading and writing in this way.
I feel that one reason people read and write (and sometimes why I read and write), that is not often viewed as a reason to read and write, is loneliness. Humans can be the most vile and evil creatures. They can produce words that pierce the soul and leave bleeding wounds that never heal. Monsters are what man becomes when hate and ignorance find a home inside us. Without empathy, we see nothing but ourselves and understand not the pain we may inflict on others every day. Humans can love, triumph, and encourage; however, humans can also hate, destroy, and damage. Books, on the other hand, can do none of those. All they can do is offered up to us the knowledge or story they hold inside. The same with paper and pencil (or any medium you use to write with). All they can do give unto us their potential of endless possibilities. Reading and writing can bring comfort when there’s no one to listen to us or understand what we are going through. Like H. Bennett pointed out, reading (and writing) can take us to places beyond the boundaries of reality where we can forget the world and those that have hurt us when we feel alone.
N. Fang 4blue
All throughout elementary school and even into high school we were taught about the author’s purpose: to inform, to persuade, to explain, and to entertain. Thus, it makes perfect sense that people read to be informed, to be persuaded, to have something explained to them, and to be entertained. Despite this, I think the deeper reason that people write is simply because they have a story to tell – whether it be about themselves, someone else, the time they went skydiving, or a character they thought up last night in the shower; and people read because they want to hear those stories.
I, personally, read to escape reality. This quote from Ray Bradbury proves that this is not only true for readers, but for writers too: “You must stay drunk on writing so reality cannot destroy you.” I know this is a cliché, but books transport me to another world and allow me to do something that would be impossible anytime else in the real world: get inside someone else’s head and see what they see, feel what they feel, think what they think, and understand exactly why they do the things they do. I think it is this ability that books have to allow people to see things from another person’s point of view that draws many people, like H. Bennett, to reading. People read to meet new people, explore exotic places, and learn about things that they are unable to experience directly.
People write to communicate things that are difficult to tell. The book Night, which I think most of us read in ninth grade, is a good example of this. Elie Wiesel wrote this book to tell the story of his nearly indescribable experience as Jew during the Holocaust. I believe another reason people write is to express themselves, to get their feelings down on paper. Paper, sometimes unlike people, is not judgmental. It will not tell you whether you are right or wrong, and it will not criticize you for how you feel. Sometimes the best therapy does not have to include a professionally trained psychologist, but rather a blank sheet of paper and a pencil or pen. In this way, I agree with N. Fang’s comment that reading and writing can bring comfort to people.
N. Narayanan 2B
We read to gain knowledge, to comfort ourselves, and to have our own perspective.
Like N. Narayanan wrote, reading keeps us informed. We read the stop sign so we know to stop; instructions so we know how to make something; warning labels so we know something dangerous is lurking behind the metal doors; nutrition facts so we know there are peanuts that we are allergic to in the candy bar we love so much; news so we know about the earthquake in Haiti. We become educated through reading textbooks and novels. Kind of like what H. Bennett is saying, we are like in someone else’s body experiencing what they had experienced. We learn from the characters’ mistakes, fictional or non-fictional.
I also really agree with what N. Fang and N. Narayanan is stating: reading gives people comfort and it also helps people to escape reality. I once read a book called Book Thief by Marcus Zusak. It was a story set in World War II Germany. The main character Liesel read to escape the reality, which were deaths of nearly everyone she knew. Words gave her hope and power. Reading a book was the only time she didn’t have to think about or believe the horrible reality she was experiencing.
In the Chinese Cultural Revolution, any book that was implying revolution against the government and anything un-related to being loyal to the government were to be destroyed and educated people were imprisoned. Books helped the blinded people to see through the lies of the government and wish to revolt against them. The government did not want the people have their own perspective and reasoning, so they blinded the people by controlling their reading intake.
We write to share our knowledge and perspective, and also to keep us sane.
Authors who write books want to share their knowledge and perspective. Textbooks have lots of information for us to learn. Novels have lots of different perspectives for us to exclaim over. We write to communicate our knowledge and perspective.
Personally after I write diaries, I feel saner. If something horrible happened in my day, after I write it down, I would feel a little bit better. It’s kind of similar to talking to someone; writing is like talking to the paper with a pencil.
H. Wang 4Blue
I truly believe what N. Narayanan and H. Wang stated about how reading keeps us informed. It really does, it gives you information about everything, the news, school, entertainment, and knowledge about things you've never known before. Many people also just read to give yourself something interesting and fun to do. I read to explore and to learn and to understand things sometimes that I never have before.
For the writing, a quote I found online at www.brainyquote.com/quotes really agreed with what I believe partially. "The role of a writer is not to say what we all can say, but what we are unable to say." ~Anaïs Nin.
I understand how many people write because they don't want to express it verbally. I, myself, write when I can't express something verbally. When I'm upset or frustrated and the closest thing to me is a pen and paper I write, and I write all my thoughts down that I can't say. Many authors write great books that way. Autobiographies are written on people's lives and in some, you find events in their lives that no one knew about because they never verbally spoke of it. H. Wang said "writing is like talking to the paper with a pencil." it truly is to me and and its also an expresser in my opinion. Also, some authors write because they want to inform people and they want to give people something to enjoy. Some authors also write because they want to show some people what their life was like, it can also help and inform someone make their lives change. Writing can be used in many ways to write, informing, helping entertainment, and for enjoyment of writing.

Why do we as human read and write. Well, as Dr. Suess said ,“The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” If we did not read we would not learn anything and we would not be able to do many things such as: Drive,Cook,Build new things, or even maybe one day finding the cure for cancer. With reading we can save lives. Writing is also very important. If we didn't have writing then we would not be able to do many things either. Reading and Writing go hand in hand because you cant just have one or the other. That is why I think that reading and writing are very important.
e.adams 3b
I, like N. Narayanan, also read and write to escape reality. While entertaining, it is also a way to help your mind grow. Books contribute to imagination, like fertilizer for your mind. I believe imagination is one of the most valuable things you can have.
Writing is also very important to me. Writing for me is not just putting words onto paper, it is a therapy. It is a coping mechanism. It is a way for thoughts to flow from your mind to the paper; a secret between you and the blue lines. It is a way to straighten out the jumbled mess in your head. I always feel better after I write, as if the eye of the hurricane has finally come to my brain, leaving it peaceful. Some nights I can't sleep without journaling first.
Writing is an art. A way for people to see the world through your eyes. Pictures pop up from the page and dance across your eyes, and the pictures are different to everyone. To me, that is true art.
- C. Jacobs 2B
Writing is a way to express your feelings in a way that you cannot do any other way. Also reading is something we all need in order to comprehend and understand the world in which we live in. Without reading we would be oblivious to the world around us because so much of our lives are centered around reading. Writers are people who express themselves by weaving there emotions into a story. In the book Les Miserables by Victor Hugo he says shows the issues in Paris at that time in a story that has entertained us for years. This is why reading/writing is important in or lives
C. Estes 4B
After reading through everyone's comments, I really began to think about why do I read and why do I write. I think that, like C Jacobs, writing is a therapy. It is a great way to relieve stress when you are worried about something. Writing is a way to get out what you really feel. I think about what I say alot of the times and I often think, "That wasn't really what I was trying to say", or "I wish that i could take that back and rephrase it into what I really meant". This happens so often for people. There are no words you could say to show what you truly are feeling and thinking. Sometimes this happens because people are afraid of what people with think about them. No one can denie that they ahve ever felt this way. People think that if they don't join the mob then the mob will run over them. People also are pack animals. That is why a form of punishment is isolation. People can't stand to be without other people with them. It is instinct to blend in. It is how we survive.
I write because sometimes it is easier for me to put my hands on the keyboard and "let em rip". I often times express myself so much better in writing than I do outloud. I honestly think that people write because it is a way that someone can truly learn who that person is. People blog ananymously because it is a way that they can get out what they feel is right and know one would every know that it is them. Someone extremely popular who feels something very strongly might be scared to share that. So what do they do? They blog ananymously. Then, and only then, can they truly express their feelings on a subject.
I read because it is a way, like N. Narayanan and C. Jacobs said, that people can escape from the real world. A way that people can escape from their mistakes and their stressful life into a world where everything is perfect and everyone has a happily ever after. This is why I read. Sometimes when I feel closed in by everyone around me I read because it gives me a fresh look on life. It helps me recognize the places that I have gone wrong and the things that I need to fix. Reading is a way that people can push back all that has happened to them and start over in a new world. By the time you sinish the book, you have almost completed a new life. One doesn't look at life the same way. Then comes the next book which changes your views on stuff again. Over and over and over this happens. That is what keeps us reading the books. We crave for more of the great escape from our grim lives. No one is content with what they have. People with curly hair want straight hair. People with straight hair want curly hair. People who are tall want to be short. People who are short want to be tall. Reading is a way that we can become who we want to be in reality. A way that we can fix all the bad things and make them good. A way that controls us and manipulates us so well that we hunger for it. Reading is almost like a drug to me. It makes me happy and makes me feel content with what happens in my life, knowing that when things get crappy, I can turn back into my own little world where everything there is just how I want it.
I believe that reading and writing is like dreaming while you are awake. You are in a story that you know is not real, but at the same time, it really doesn't matter. Yeah, the book will end, just like a dream, but memories don't die. Writing is a way to make your own dream. The one where you fall into an abyss of happily ever after.

Do we write, because we have something to say, or do we write because we have too, maybe we write because we have talent to do so, or we write because we just can, I know we definitely write so we can share, share our hopes and dreams, our failures and successes, share our falls and our raise, our defeats and victories, our hate and love, or simply just share our thoughts. Writing is a matter that can be very intimate, like a journal or a personal dairy; or can be very public like a column or an article.
I believe we write because we feel the power of the written words; reading words and hearing them are totally different, when we read the stories we live their worlds, we embrace the heroes, we become the words we read, imagination runs free, not limited by other senses of vision, touch, hearing or even smell. While reading, your world is the extent of your mind, and the mind can cross spaces of time and distance, bend realities and makeup new rules, that we actually can't do. When I read about war, I can imagine my own custom settings of that war, even with all details given to me by the writer, I still can manage to make it my own, while in films, you are limited to what your vision interprets to the brain, if you see a red tank, you cant convince yourself it's blue.
I believe words say and have it all, you can express feelings otherwise unexpressed by sounds, written words are always true, no matter the pretense or the facade been put, you can always find parts of the writer in their own words.
C. Bennett 3B
I think it is quite interesting to read everyone’s comments. I like what they all have to say and how they all have the same things and yet have different takes on our world. I agree with N. Narayanan that most people escape reality by reading and writing. I don’t like reiterating what everyone says but, to me this statement is very true. I read to escape from my problems, to go on that quest with the hero, to fall in love with the characters, I want them to succeed, and want them to conquer the evil person. I read to get a better vocabulary, to gain a better understanding of the world, and get information from other places like H.Wang and many other people have said already. I also read to feel, I read to cry with the characters, laugh, get mad, shout for joy with, to FEEL emotion that I sometimes feel like I don’t have because of everything that goes on.
Writing is something I don’t know what I would do without. Like N. Fang said, “I feel that one reason people read and write (and sometimes why I read and write), that is not often viewed as a reason to read and write, is loneliness.” This statement hit me. It made me think, why do I write? And I know now why I write, I write to show everyone else what I’m feeling. I hide behind a façade almost every day and my writing shows what I’m thinking because I know the paper doesn’t have an opinion and won’t yell back at you for feeling that way. Paper, like C. Jacobs said, is my escape, ready to listen. It is that undying friend who won’t judge, who will stay by your side, and who will never forget you.
The words that flow across the page, whether you wrote it or not, will impact you and the way you think. We read and write to be ourselves, to let the world go, and to show who we truly are. Written Word in general is a powerful emotion that no one can smother out of us.

I confess that it is unusual when I get the urge to write anything. As the years go on I find that I only write when it is necessary to express myself on paper, which is really only in school. I hate how I know this is happening to me, but I can’t find a solution to it or the time to think out why my love for writing has evaporated. When I do write though it’s a relaxing sensation, I feel that writing is a great way for everyone to communicate to one another universally. I cannot ever remember who first told me these words, but they’ve always stuck with me.
“I write because if I don’t my head will explode!”
Does anyone ever feel like that? I know I do. That feeling that I’ve got to do this right now! Or else. Usually I have that sense of urgency to do something now because I know if I don’t do it or write it down I’ll forget about it entirely. I think that’s another reason why people, and myself, write. We wish to preserve a moment, a feeling, or an idea. Sometimes people write to communicate to others and sometimes they’re doing it for themselves (and their sanity).
My reason for reading is to get away, to experience the world through another’s mind, to learn about something I’ve never experienced, to get a better idea of what I should do with myself. I would like to think that I can be creative, do something no one else can, have the courage to face the day without worry, or believe that just because I wish it to be true it is.
I can’t do all of what I wish to do though, but sometimes reading and dreaming that I can is enough. When it is not enough I suppose I should sit down and write about it. Wistful thinking can lead to some great things if you know where to channel it.
A. Parish 4B
I do agree that writing is a way to express yourself, and you can write whatever you feel. For me, I honestly don’t like to write. For some odd reason, I can’t put what I want to say on paper. I’m the type of person who likes to keep things in my head. If I write what I want to say, it’s not the same thing. It’s as if I’m a totally different person.
On the other hand, I don’t mind reading. Reading is important and sometimes it helps you get your mind off of stressful things in the real world. I usually only read books that are assigned to me, but every once in a while I read a book that I like. When I find a book that I like, I can’t stop reading it, and I don’t want the book to end. When I finish reading a book, it sticks with me for a long time. “You know you've read a good book when you turn the last page and feel a little as if you have lost a friend.” ~Paul Sweeney
The comment just before is I.Fasina 3B.
By reading others' comments, it teaches me about the many reasons why people read and write.
For me, I read because it allows me to enter into a world that is different from my own, as someone said earlier. It is kind of like a safe haven for me. Books are open to anybody; they do not discriminate like some people might. Reading allows me- and I'm sure a lot of others too- to dive into another world, and to really become part of the story.
People write for many reasons, whether it be to inform, to relieve stress, or just for the love of it. Writing allows us to be creative as well. We can write so many things that we know are not possible in the real world. For example the Harry Potter series. J.K. Rowling writes about wizards, and monsters that are no way possible in real life. We can take our writing to so many levels, and be whoever we want to be.
Y. Akingbemi, 3Blue
As many people have said before, reading is the only thing that creates another world for me. I feel like, by reading I can escape the problems of this life and have no other concerns other than the other "world" I'm in when I'm reading. Joseph Addison said, "Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body." I just love this mental picture because reading also keeps you up to date on events and keeps your mind fresh!
I also love to write because it is how I can express myself without having to physically talk to someone else. I actually keep a prayer journal and I really enjoy going back and reading answered prayers, how my life has changed, and things I have gone through to make me into the person I am today. These are just a few of my reasons and I really enjoyed reading everyone else's!
a.aulner 2b
There are so many reasons that we read and write. As many have said before me, it is to inform, persuade, and entertain. To me, those are only the basic reasons. There is a feeling of hope, interest and love when you pick up a book. Someone put their time, their passion, and their thoughts in a book so that people can learn and enjoy them. A book can be used as a way to learn or a way to get away from our day to day lives. When I am upset and need something to distract me from my life, I grab a book. A well written book can sweep you off into another world, causing you to leave all your troubles behind you. It is a calming and relaxing pastime.
Writing has changed the world into what it is now. Without writing, words and thoughts would only be passed on by mouth, and, as everyone knows, it is not a good way to learn what was said. With writing, we get to read the actual words of a person without it being edited.
Something that is well written is written with passion. When I write, you can tell if I am truly passionate and love what I am writing or not. Every word that is written expresses the author's emotions; the love, the anger, the depression, the hate, the joy. When you write with passion the words seem to flow out of you, and the reader can tell. As I read the others' replies, I can see that we all have different thoughts and ideas about what it is about. That is why we have reading and writing. It lets us show our individuality and that is a priceless thing.

I, like C.Estes, think that we write because we have no other way of expressing our feelings. We also write because words can't describe it and we need to just write our thoughts down on a sheet of paper.
I think that we read because we want to find out useful information or what is going on in our world/society. Most people read because it helps them gain more knowledge and it increases their vocabulary. And other people read...simply because they are told to or forced to for a class and etc.

I think that to find out why people read you have to figure out what they like to read. Like myself I like to read sports biographies and iformational books that teach me about sports from cycling to basketball. I read those types of books because I like to know how things work and how the bodyt can be menipulated to perform certain moves on the football field or basktball court.
I'm not reall yone for writing but as others have said before me that many people write to get away from reality. Others write to get their ideas and thoughts down on paper or on a computer so that they can come back to them or build on them later. Most times I write only because I have to.
So to really get an idea why people read or write you have to know the topics they like tr write about and how much relivance it has to their life.

I dont like to write. i wish i did it would make English class so much easier but i dont. for people who do like to write i think it is a great way to express your feelings. everybody has their own way of expressing themselves, for me it is clay. i love the feel of the clay between my hands it gives me a tremendous sense of creativity, just like writing does for so many of my peers.
While i may not like to write i love to read. I loved the quote by Thomas Helm that S. Battye posted that said "My test of a good novel is dreading to begin the last chapter." I read that and it really stuck with me because right now i am reading a book and last night i avoided finishing a book because i reached the last chapter and i think that a good book should make you do that.

As for me I usually don't write unless I have to. On the other hand others might like to write to gret away from reality. And still other write just to get thier ideas down on paper or on a computer so they can come back to them or build on them later.
So to really find out why people read or write I think that you have to to find out what topics people like to read or write about, and find why that topic has any relevance to their life.

Everyone's comment were very interesting to read. I really enjoyed them. I like to read and write because it is a type of therapy. It can let you wander to so many places and can make you think. About Pattyn Scarlet Von Stratten quote from H. Bennett's blog. It lets you release your yourself from all of the worlds troubles and personal problems. I like to write and read to express myself. I often can get very close to the characters. I also feel it being away i can speak to other people or learning more about someone. L. Huber brings up a good point how writing has changed the world and that words would only be passed by mouth. So then we couldn't actually here the real words of people. Writing and Reading is great
We write to share our knowledge and perspective, and also to keep us sane. ~H. Wang
I believe that reading is a way to learn emotions and how to read them. Most parents don't tell their kids "this is how you get a boyfriend, this is how you feel about a boyfriend, this is what you do with a boyfriend, etc". Most kids learn that through movies, television shows, and books. Books have been around longer than movies and television, thus, in my mind, they made way for the movies and television.
Books are manuals on how to live life. No matter if they're fiction or not, they always give an aspect on life. People read to grasp different aspect and make their own. People read to learn about their world.
Thus, I believe that people write to share about their perspective of the world: to share their own manual on how life should be lived.
Or maybe, their own manual on how life should not be lived.
L. Backman 4B
I just want to say I really enjoyed reading everybody's comments. I like reading and writing because it gives me a chance to connect to a someone that doesn't exist most of the time or your able learn about certain individuals. I liked the quote from H. Bennett's blog. It gets you to imagine again as if you were a little kid. When everything was so big and your belief in imaginable things were so strong.
Now that were older we have lots more responsibilities. So reading and writing can take you back into made up worlds. One of my favorite characters in Dr. Seuss books are the Whos. That in "Horton Hears a Who" they live on a flower and you get a connection to them. Hoping that all of the other animals don't destroy the flower. You can also learn many lessons from books. Like "A persons a person no matter how small."
Writing and reading can be a type of therapy and let you see what others believe and lets you do the same to others. Writing is also a great way of getting the actual words of someone and not from someone elses mouth.
I read and write to express myself i also find it being a great way to speak to others. I can relate to A. Parish "I write because if i don't my head will explode."
Reading and writing is truly an amazing way to leave the world you live in and lets you wander into unknown areas. There are many branches of reading that can lead you to so many expressions. It can also be a conscience for you. Reading and writing is fabulous and every word is so strong and powerful.

I beleive that most people like myself read for knowledge and to entertain themselves like everybody has said before me. I beleive that reading is essential in life rather you like it or not. Reading can take you anywhere you let it if you get the right book and have the right imigination, same goes for writing. You can get lost in reading and writing if you just indulge yourself in the book, or whatever you are writing.
For me I would rather read than write. I read when I want to go travel someplace other than my room and because when I read I feel as if anything is possibleand that nothing can stop and me. When I write I can be anything I want to be and do anything I want. If I want to be a astronaunt going to the moon I can be or if I want travel back through time I can anything is possilbe when you have a sheet of papaer and a pen/pencil.
I beleive that weas humans read and write just to escape reality and what is going on in our life no matter if its good or bad, and because reading and writing can be a friend when you have none, as many has said before.

Our whole life revolves around reading and writing. Without writing there wouldn't be books. without books we wouldn't be able to read. Reading and writing are two of the biggest skills we need to use to be able to learn.
With the reading and writing skills we are able to learn history and all the other subjects. That allows us to become better all around people and students.

Just on my mind:
First off, I prefer writing because it's a easier way to express myself. Verbally I usually express but there's is never enough time to, thus I prefer writing because people take time to read what others say in detail. Writing to me is a better way to gain opportunities and easier to gain an advantage.
Answer to question:
I think that we read and write because as I said before it gives us the opportunity to read what someone is saying. Many people don't actually listen to what you are saying, they may put it into consideration, but if you write it there is a opportunity to really let people what you are saying or trying to pass on. Writing gives you a time to think instead of verbally blurting it out.

"When I look back, I am so impressed again with the life-giving power of literature. If I were a young person today, trying to gain a sense of myself in the world, I would do that again by reading, just as I did when I was young."

I can really relate to T. Lipscomb because I don't enjoy writing that much either, but I can see why so many people do. As many people have already said, I too believe that people write to express themselves.
I also think people read to find themselves or to get away from realty. If you look at a person's favorite books, you can figure out what kind of person they are. You can discover their likes, interests, and beliefs. I have a list of my own favorite books that range from Les Miserables to Winnie the Pooh to The Bible. I think all three of these books describe the person I am in one way or another.
When I don't want to deal with everything that's going on around me, I pick up a book and start reading. It's just a great way to escape whatever pain you are dealing with. Books allow you to laugh, cry, heal, or learn something new.
C. Norman 4B
If there's a book you really want to read, but it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it. ~Toni Morrison
I completely agree with what H.Wang and C.Jacobs stated that writing is to share our knowledge ,It's like a therapy . when you are so angry and you want to be calm ,writing can be the best way to ease your temper.or as N.Narayanan said "people write when they have a story to tell" , when they want to share the adventures they've been into.
I also liked Y.Akingbemi reason and his/her example for writing that "we write about the things which are not possible."It's exactly like making an impossible wish.therefore , you try to make it happen by writing about it.
“To read is to fly: it is to soar to a point of vantage which gives a view over wide terrains of history, human variety, ideas, shared experience and the fruits of many inquiries.”
- A C Grayling,
I think one of the most important reasons of reading is to take us into adventures which may not happen in reality.moreover,I like to read because it gives me the chance to meet new cultures ,people ,characters and countries that I may never meet.also as H.Bennet stated "with books you can go anywhere you want to go."
M.Farshidianfar 4B
I personally think that each person reads and writes for different reasons. It is more of a personal experience, as if to ask, what do you get out it? What is one thing that every person has? An opinion.
I think that not only do people read and write to learn, but to express their own personal opinion. Not every book out there is nonfictional. And the way that characters are described in fictional stories show what the author thinks about that type of person, or even sometimes, resembles the author themselves. I know that a lot of times in school, we have to write about our opinion about things. We may write a true story about what happened 50 years ago, but how many times can that same exact story be written. How many times are people going to want to read the same story with different words? To make each story about the same event more interesting, authors add in a little self expression or just spice it up a bit.
I'm not saying that's the only reason I think people read and write. I too read to escape reality. But, I see reading fiction more as an idea for something that we know will probably never happen. I also think that people read to maybe experience something tragic that you may not necessarily want, but wonder what it would be like. Maybe just that little bit of it while reading may be just enough. Like stories about heaven, they are not uncommon, and some people wonder what it's going to be like or what you would be missing.
Basically, just like books, each reason for reading and writing is your opinion and it's your experience with it that matters.

"We read to know that we are not alone"
-C.S. Lewis
I believe that we read to get away from reality. When you read a book that you really enjoy you get away from everyday things, and your mind floats away from all of your problems. When we read books it brings to life our imagination. I think people write to put their perspective out there. I feel like when I write I can voice my opinions. I feel like reading and writing are kind of like stress relievers. Some people use journals to write how they really feel down, and even though someone might not even read that journal, you always end up feeling better, like you've let someone read it, even if you haven't. I agree with J. Brown when they said that "reading and writing can be a type of therapy".
H.Martin 2nd-B
I believe that people write because they want to express their feelings and thoughts but not in words. People like poets write because they want to either express their feelings for things or because they want to get a point across to the world. People like narrative authors and novel authors write because they want to entertain the general public. All-in-all I believe people chose to write because they want to and they need to in order to show their feelings for something so they dont eat themselves up inside.
A. Sorenson 4blue
I agree with J.Suh, people read and write for all different reasons. From anything like expressing emotions and striving for more knowledge people write and read about.
Everyone has their own opinion when it comes to reading and writing, some love reading and hate writing, while others hate both. Some say the only reasons why they read and write is because they are forced to by teachers in school. For me, writing is a way for everyone to help remember and preserve an idea for the future. Writing grants us the ability to freely write about our feelings without having to worry about being reprimanded.
And like J.Suh said before, reading allows us to "escape reality". Reading takes people to far off places like Hogwarts in Harry Potter and Oz in The Wizard of Oz. Reading can be an enjoyable experience, it just all depends on the book that you read. So really people have their own reasons for reading and writing things.
B. Hill 3rd-B
Some people write to make others think. Last year we read Fahrenheit 451 that was written to show society what could become of the world if the increasing common trend of absent mindedness, materialism, and lack of morals was to be ignored and allowed to flourish. Similarly, we read The Time Machine to show us how the discrimination of one people over a large amount of time could be disastrous to at least one group of people.
Some people write for entertainment. When Jules Verne was 12 he hung around the docks listening to sailors talking about their adventures and where all they had been. Jules' father had to take him off a ship headed for India and beat him until he promised "From now on, I'll travel only in my imagination." Jules wrote books about far away places and things that nobody had seen before, all for the purpose of entertainment.
Some people write for informational purposes. News papers, bulletins, biographies, encyclopedias, and dictionaries are all written sources of written information waiting to be read and used.
Some people read. People read books like The Time Machine to think about the hard questions in life. Some people read books like 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea because they are bored. Some people read because they have to do some research to do an assignment like a class blog post...:). You pretty much need to read to function in society, and sometimes writing is part of that too.

Like many others have already said, people write for a variety of reasons. For me writing can sometimes be more personal. I write to figure things out. When I put my thoughts on paper I am better able to asses a situation. I think others also do this in forms of poetry or personal essay, though when I write (outside of school) it is usually a little more informal.
In a way, you could say writing is meditative (not just academic, as it is sometimes viewed).

Like other people have said, I read to escape reality. If I am reading I am not a tenth grade student worrying about a test the next day, I can be Bertie Wooster stealing a cow-creamer,Inigo Montoya on the hunt for the Six Fingered Man, Percy Weasley watching his brother be killed, or Sara Crewe living in an attic. When reading I can put my own problems up next to theirs and say to myself, "Look at them, they are facing death and destruction, and they aren't giving up! My problems aren't nearly that bad, why should I let them stop me?"
Comparing my life to their stories can be very beneficial to me.
M.O'Shea 4B
Most people that have posted seem to be in agreement that people read to escape everyday life, and for a short time, experience the life or an adventure of another. I agree with this thought. I also believe, like many others, that people read for the purpose of educating themselves for school or their own personal purposes. People also tend to enjoy all forms of reading, not just novels. Here is a quote from Francis Bacon explaining his thoughts on reading and writing, “Reading maketh a full man, conference a ready man, and writing an exact man.” He believes, like me, that reading can make one full or complete. Even though reading may not be my favorite thing, I believe it is essential to understanding the world in which we live.
Writing is one way that a person can express personal thought or emotion. Some write for pleasure and just for fun. Others may write for school and research. Writing is one of the most basic forms of communication of ideas in the world today. Millions of emails and other forms of communication are sent all over the world daily. Writing is a popular way of spreading ones thoughts to others. “We are a species that needs and wants to understand who we are. Sheep lice do not seem to share this longing, which is one reason why they write so little.” Anne Lamott.
I thought up this little saying, “People read so they can understand, and write so others may.” I based this quote by the ideas in Anne Lamott’s.
C. Pate 2B
So far, people have said that we read and write to escape reality, to communicate, and to gain knowledge. However, there is another purpose for which many, if not all authors, and even those who aren't great publishers like to read and write for.
Writing in particular can be used to express emotions. Sometimes, pen and pencil can be more consulating than friends and family in tough times. We may prefer to elaborate in great detail on our adventures, with much hyperbola and similes, instead of sharing them by word of mouth.
Reading the works of others not only enlightens us to another category of the world, but also lets us know of the emotions that they wish to convey. As the scholars above have said, every other has a purpose. However, reading between the lines helps us understand the emotions behind the purpose. What "really" drove that person to write about that topic?
Perhaps that is why many students often whine about having to write or read for school. They aren't often expressing the emotions that they feel, but are having to write on a topic that was already chosen for them. If they are reading a book, they aren't necessarily reading a book that is expressing what they like to read about. However, whenever one can get past those things, and still find a way to express himself in whatever he is writing, or find emotions in whatever he reads, he will become a more intellectual person.
A.Jacobo 2B
why do we read and write? i think we read and write to share the way we feel about something or to take us to a different place than we are really sometimes reading a book will take you to a different/better place that will make you feel a part of something bigger than yourself. reading can make you be able to understand things that you couldnt understand before your read it put in other words.
C.Davis 3W
Like J. Suh wrote earlier, I believe that people read and write for a variety of reasons. Some to escape reality, some to gain knowledge, and others for academic purposes.
I, personally, read and write to express emotions like A. Jacobo said. When I am upset, I like to write out how I feel and release some of that stress or tension that was built up. When I am happy, I like to write about how blessed I am and about what's on my mind. Writing is a great way to express yourself!
I love reading. My mom has always told me about my first day of kindergarten. I hopped in the car as soon as school was dismissed and I started crying my eyes out. I explained to my mom that I was so disappointed that I hadn't learned to read that day. I couldn't wait to learn. I wanted to be able to find the joy in books that others did. But I learned soon enough and reading is a passion of mine today.
K. Kuykendall 4B
Why do people read and write? Like C. Norman said I often see people reading to escape the real world and write to express their emotions. Perhaps they are trying to persuade an audience or share information that is important to them, maybe they really want an A on their paper or they really want that college scout to like their application essay. But how honest is the writing of a person who is only trying to please others? How are we ever to know the emotions one has in such writing? Others of us write without clean-cut intentions. The distracted student that jots down beautiful lyrics beneath the scribble of arithmetic in her math binder, the inspired college junior typing her heart out trying to show others what she sees in the malnourished children around the world, the content grandfather pen-palling to his eager 8 year old grandson, the teenager angrily scratching into her diary, allowing her ink pen to scream all the frustrated words she dare not say. These people with these stories and memories and feelings...they get the most out of writing. They take advantage of the voice that silently screams at you, in that way that only written words are capable of. It is people like this who let others in...they are honest, they are real, and they are speaking. But are we willing to listen? Humans as a whole bustle around getting things done, never taking the time to stop...breath...and think about the reason they are here in the first place. When one is willing to silence the cell phone, turn off the t.v. and mute the radio are they able find who they are. In fact I fully believe they will find who others are as well. This, if nothing else, should be the motivation behind all reading. Individuals’ minds will be opened, they will learn to laugh at jokes, they cease judgments when they actually process the things others have to say. Isn't that basically what we as humans strive for in the world anyways? For someone else to simply know where you're coming from, to understand YOU, not the clothes you wear or the car you drive or even the dark shadows of your past. Just you, just your voice in the silence that is too often broken.

When I read the question why do we read and write thoughts ran through my head. My first thought was that reading and writing were things we had no control over since we had to go school and that was what we had to learn. But, other reasons we read and write are because it lets us escape into a mind set of our own where no one can intervene. At the same time we read for enjoyment we are picking up knowledge that can take us to places unimaginable. When we write we enhance our penmanship as well as let our feelings out whether they are good or bad.
My reasons for writing are because sometimes I don’t feel I’m expressing myself as well as I would verbally. For example, when I may be mad at my parents I wouldn’t haul off and say what’s running through my mind. Instead I would write a fully written letter expressing my feelings of the situation and why I was mad at them. Just like the journal entry I had Friday, sometimes I might want to free write just to let my thoughts out, talk about my future plans, and let out on paper what’s on mind at the current moment. It may sound weird but guys can have journals and diaries, too. I write in my journal because it is like an everyday log that I can look back on when I’m in college and show my kids and say “Oh I remember that time.”
I read because it is essential to life. Reading is like another subject that you need to learn to succeed in life. Like Dr. Seuss’s book “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” is what will happen when you read. I read in free time and I read just when I want to know something I didn’t know before. Reading and writing go hand in hand and are the building blocks to greater knowledge. When I read books I feel calm and peaceful like I’m floating on clouds. It makes me wonder of things that will never come true. Such as, what if pigs really could fly? When you read it is like being lifted off your feet to serenity.
One of Dr. Seuss’s Quotes is: “So the writer who breeds more words than he needs, is making a chore for the reader who reads.” I agree with this quote in the way that the more you write you benefit yourself as well as benefiting the mind and knowledge of the reader.
G. Green 2B
We read and write because we have to. Reading brigs information and understanding while writing gives information and understading. We do both everyday wherther we realize it or not. My favorite section in the news paper is the sports section, i read it for scores and statistics which is information. Even if you write your name your informing the reader of who you are. We need reading and writiond because without it we wouldn't know our history. We wouldnt be able to vote or anything. Without reading and writing the world would not function.
M. Woody 3b
Why do we write? As many have stated before we write for multiple reasons. Some people's reasons are different than others, and some don't write at all.
I personally do not write much, but when i do (and it not being an assignment)I write to express my feelings or to get a point across. I also write just to get random thoughts on paper that i fell the need to be on paper. Doing this keeps me thinking and helps me truly express myself.
Reading is the same as writing in my opinion. We (or at least I) do i to get away from life and imagine or express our selves. I believe that reading also betters the mind and makes us smarter. But it really is more than that. When I read something I really enjoy, I imagine that I am in the story or I am in the article doing what they are talking about. It makes me just forget about any worries and just imagine. To me reading and writing are gateways and thats why we(people) read and write.
W. Graves 3B
I feel that there are many different reasons for writing. Some people will write to express their feeling in ways they cannot explain by speaking. I am a person that when I am upset about something, it really helps me to just get all my feelings out on paper. I write to help explain the troubles that I am going through. If it is because of someone that hurt me, I will write a letter to try to explain to them what they did to make me feel that bad. Then there are a lot of writers who write to just entertain an audience. They add humor in their writing so we can laugh and enjoy their writing. Some entertaining writing is very serious and tells a story about that either relates to something that the author had in his past or it could just be a completely made up story. It really doesn’t matter. There are far too many reasons to list why people in general write.
People read for multiple reasons. They may just have nothing else to do so they just pick up a book and start reading it just to pass the time. There are some in the world where they read to connect to the characters to the book, maybe by an experience that they shared or they have gone through the same emotions. I personally will read to just get entertainment out of the book. I like the beautiful language that a lot of writers use in their stories. Some writers have a wide vocabulary, which emphasize the writing and brings it out. Then there are people that just read to learn information about some subject or they have to because they are in class. There are many reasons to read, but I feel that everyone should read.
J. Bettcher 2B
To me reading and writing lets you express your feelings of what you are reading or what you are writing. When you look at a book someone is reading you see what their personalities are like and what they enjoy to learn and read about. I have read so many great papers over the years and you can just almost listen to the way people right. Their expressions of a certain topic or just writing an essay. I am not a big reader but if I get my head into a book that I enjoy then nobody can stop me from putting it down. Writing is not my thing even though i try my best I am just not a good writer. Throughout this year I hope to become a better reader and writer.
I believe that we read and write because we think it's the right thing. I love reading and writing. Reading lets me be able to understand something different, about a person or thing. I enjoy it because each book is individual, none the same. I also enjoy writing very much as well; writing takes me to a place like no other, where I can just express myself. Like some people have said above, I love keeping a journal to jot down my thoughts and prayers. It helps me express myself and I just love writing because it makes me, me. I like writing about things that important to me, such as my family; it is very easy for me to write something about them. These are just a couple of reasons why i enjoy both reading and writing, and I have enjoyed reading the previous responses.
M. Shields 3B
I believe we read or write is for the heck of it or the knowledge that we seek in it. We can learn new vocabulary and techniques by reading and put it into writing. For me, I read to explore new ways people write their stories. I enjoy writing than reading because I can be creative and funny while I'm at it. Everybody has their own opinion about reading and writing depending on their strenghts and weaknesses. I enjoy reading adventuous books for my funny adventuous stories because I enjoy making people laugh and smile to vanish that boredom and sadness that they have.

i read because i like to read. i find it fun to read most books. i however dont really like the books the schools asign and those i only read because i have to. i like to read books with action and comedy.

I feel that people read and write because they are bored. They do it when the cables out, the x-box is broken, the internet is down, its raining outside, and you lost all the money to your Monopoly board game. It happens when your i-pod's dead, your friends are gone, your chores are done, or your forced to by some classroom assignment your teacher gave you.

Reading is tranquility. We all have said we read to escape from our everyday lives. It's the one place where we can go where we want to go or be what you want to be. Reading is not black words on a page, it's more, and it’s inspiring. After each page we are inspired and eager to flip through the pages to see what's happening. My favorite quote is by Thomas Helm, "My test of a good novel is dreading to begin the last chapter." If each page gets better and better, what happens when the story is over?
Whenever I read an amazing novel, usually a love story, I am inspired. I am inspired to find my own amazing love story.
I am not a writer. I don't write in diaries or narratives. My way of expressing my thoughts and my emotions is in a unique way. I am usually inspired through a great quote from a book, movie or something funny my one of my friends says at lunch. The weird part is it actually works. I actually remember what was going through my mind that day. Anyone can read through your diary or journal and understand what you are going through, but with quotes people don't give the time or day to read.
S. Battye 3B
From reading all the comments said above I have discovered that different people read and write for many different reasons. I believe that everything said above is true. Human beings do read and write to give themselves comfort, or to escape from reality, or to gain knowledge, to keep you sane, etc… It depends on what book you choose to read or what topic you choose to write about. You could read or write about someone else’s life that you wish you had, or read and write about history that is non-fictional. Anything you choose to read or write fills a gap in everyone’s lives that you are unable to fill with a life off the paper. Writing (specifically) gives yourself the opportunity to express your feelings and ideas, the feelings and ideas you usually can’t express with your own being, through someone else. I bet that every person has had the thought “If I were someone else”; books and writing give you the chance to be that other person and fill that gap. If that gap is not filled we might just all go a little insane.
A world without stories is a world without creativity, imagination, knowledge, ideas, and opinions.
What would you do without them?

In the words of Katherine Paterson- "It is not enough to simply teach children to read; we have to give them something worth reading. Something that will stretch their imaginations- something that will help them make sense of their own lives and encourage them to reach out toward people whose lives are quite different from their own." Reading helps us to make sense of our own lives by reading about others. We learn that we are not all the same instead, we are all unique indiviuals. Writing is a way to express ourselves and a way to be heard.

I can relate to what C. Norman says when she is talking about how reading is a way to escape. I, like her, love to pick up a good book whenever I have something deep/upsetting on my mind to take me away from all of that. Books are a great escape. I also agree with her when she says that books say a lot about people and that you can get an idea of a person's personality and character traits by the books that they read.
----------
I also agree with the points R. Tang brings up. I think that we read and write for fun and knowledge. I also like to explore new techniques through reading to encorporate in my own writing.
----------
Reading and writing are two things that I absolutely love. Reading can be many things; it can be used for an easy escape from life or a tool to sharpen your knowledge. I feel that writing is also a tool for knowledge. I learn more about grammar, sentence structure and such durring my writing as apposed to learning a grammar lesson on it's own. Writing, like reading, can also be an escape. I love to get lost in my writing in the same ways I get lost in a good book. Writing helps you express yourself and loosen up while focusing on the task at hand.
----------
“A book is the most effective weapon against intolerance and ignorance.”
- Lyndon Baines Johnson
I love this quote because it is simple and simply true. Books are the most effective tool of education, and those who choose not to use it are the most ignorant in society. By reading, you broaden your horizons and learn about places and things you would never be able to experience first hand. In reading, you open up your mind to new things, and this, in my opinion, is the only way to overcome ignorance.
-H. Roberts
Like a couple of other people have said, I don't really like writing. I think it would be better if we could write how we want to write without being told. Last year I really enjoyed writing a poem, probably because there aren't as many rules. As far as reading, it is good for educating everyone. History is interesting to me. I enjoy reading about how our country was developed. We can learn a lot from history so we don't make the same mistakes...so history will not repeat itself.

I think people write to understand and express feelings in their own ways. They write either very direct to what their feeling or write about a unicorn in a enchanted forrest when they are in love. People read when they're bored, when they want to get caught up in something and completely blank out about what's around them. They want to ride a dragon through the clouds of the Himalayas or play hide and seek on the moon and a good book can give them that. People read and write to become something they can never be. I read and write for those reasons. And, personally, there isn't a better feeling then reading over a story you just wrote and genuinely liking it.
People read and write to learn or distribute information. And the art of all of it is, you can write and read anything. It can be music, poems, essays, short stories, books, cereal boxes! It can be anything and sometimes some of that writing changes your ways of seeing things. You fall in love with someone or something you'll never meet in your life. You can learn ways to get out of depression or understand more about beliefs and ways of living by reading, or you could write about those things. It's a give and take no matter what you do; its how societies thrive. We read and write to stay civilized.
C. Lord 4B
I love the quote that M. Farshidianfar used that Toni Morrison wrote. I believe people write because it is a way to express themselves... some people have a hard time saying what they actually feel, but they can put it on paper. Some of the shyest people you know, could deep down, be someone that has so much more to say than they show. So they write it on paper. People write poetry to get away from things and as a way to get out what they have deep down inside. I also believe that we write, not only to express ourselves, but to maintain history and what is happening in the present, so that the people in the future will know how we lived and how they can make their present day better! They can also learn from our mistakes if we record data and everyday life!
Some people read to become more knowledgeable, some people read as a hobby, some people read because they have to, and some people read because they just enjoy that subject. I agree with C. Norman about, she personally does not enjoy writing… I enjoy writing, but I do not enjoy reading. Like she said, I can see why people enjoy it, but personally I do not want to spend my days in my house reading a book. People have all different kinds of reasons to read, but some people escape by reading...
"A book is the only place in which you can examine a fragile thought without breaking it, or explore an explosive idea without fear it will go off in your face. It is one of the few havens remaining where a man's mind can get both provocation and privacy." ~Edward P. Morgan
A. Jones 3B
I agree with S Battye when she says "Reading is a tranquility." I have always loved to read and write even when it comes to personal time.
Reading has always been away to either get away from the real world or even your own life. When reading stories you normally live life through another individual's eyes which again, gives you a way to get away from all the troubles of your own life. Reading also gives you a chance to fantasize about different thinks that could alter/ happen to you and your life.
One thing that I love about writing is that you can express yourself in any way that you like. Whether you are writing about your life, a thought, a fantasy, a person, or even a dream you can write whatever you want because it is yours. Writing is also a great way to vent that you can choose to share or not share.
"For me, writing is exploration; and most of the time, I'm surprised where the journey takes me." -Jack Dann

You all had interesting responses to say. I really enjoyed reading what you wrote. I just used both words together in the same sentence. That is because reading and writing are inseparable; none of them exist without the other. Without writing there is nothing to be read and nobody writes without hoping that someone reads what he or she wrote. We read and write to learn about or to express feelings, ideas, and reasonings. It is a form of entertainment. Reading and writing are learnable skills, at least up to certain level. Those who really master the writing skills become writers, poets, lawyers, teachers, and maybe politicians. Probably it is fair to say that we all try to improve our writing and reading to be more successful in our lives. It is important to use these skills for good. No wonder that there is a saying that “a word is a dangerous weapon".

I believe that we as a species read and write so that we may be heard and understood. So that we may convey the feelings within to the world and say what we really feel. To write is to open your mind to the world and to lay bare your thoughts and personal opinions. To read is to glimpse into the minds of others and see what they feel and how they wish for others to feel. I feel that reading and writing are essential to seeing others as they truly are. If you do not understand a person, read something they have written, and no matter what it is, you will most likely learn something new about that person.

When I first read this question, my mind imedintly thought of slef expression. As far as writting goes anyway. I beleive that people write in order to express feeling that are hard to say aloud, and also to get a point across. I different writting situations come with differnt reasons for writting. Like jounalists for example write to inform the public on the latest news. Comidians write sets for pure intertainment. Novelists write books for you to enjoy.
Without writting there would be no reading. For me i read to escape from the chaos of life and be focus on somebody elses world for a while. Like writing, different situations call for different reasons. Scholars read for knowledge. Everyday fathers read the news papers to catch up on current events. Teens read the lastest love story for the fun of it.

I write for a sence of freedom and expression. Whenever i'm feeling stressed, or overwhelmed writing helps me to calm down.
~S. Wilson (emailed at 10:53 PM)
writing is a tool, that's what it started off as. it was a way for people to record history and stories to tell future generations. we all hate reading history books, but what if we didn't have them? what would be known as the truth if nothing was ever recorded in writing? writing is used to create and maintain a culture
now writing has evolved into a much more emotional enterprise, with stories about anything imaginable- good or bad. humans write because we're scared of what would happen if we didn't
we read to learn and to find out new things, it opens are eyes to many different facets of life from all over the world. our little towns would be so narrow minded if we never learned about anything from the outside. how would we find out about lions, tigers, oceans, and other countries if we never read about them. I'm willing to bet that nobody has ever heard about or learned about something new without having to read.

Reading and Writing is an escape from my life. It helps me forget or better understand how to deal with my problems. Writing especially helps me let everything out onto paper getting it off my chest. It makes me feel so relieved and helps me forget for awhile
