Hey everyone!
I am aware that educators tell us all the time to never use Wikipedia; however, the Wikipedia page that discusses mind control is a great way to obtain a basic idea of mind control. Here is the link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mind_control. Do NOT use the website as a source to write you paper. Use to develop a general understanding of mind control. The following are good websites that talk about mind control: http://www.educate-yourself.org/mc/ and http://www.factnet.org/rancho1.htm. The following is good website that talks about mind control in 1984: http://www.suite101.com/content/media-manipulation-in-george-orwells-1984-a142277. In 1984, the Party uses propaganda, surveillance, torture and other techniques to manipulate people. I hope this is helpful!

I noticed that Big Brother is akin to "Uncle Sam" albeit a much stronger influence in daily life
-Both (probably) fictional
-Human face to associate w/ Government
-Invoke feelings of national pride and patriotism
-Relates to Propaganda as a form of mind control

I found page numbers in the book that I hope will help. If you are looking for when they talk about the big brother posters it is on page 5. If you are looking for stuff about the thought police there is some thing on page 6-7. When it starts talking about Room 101 and when Winston goes there it starts on page 201. Hope this helps. if you are looking for a good place that talks about or uses doublethink a good place would be pgs. 180-181 or from just after the beginning of chapter 9 in book 2 when it is talking about how in the middle of hate week the speaker said that they were at war with eastasia and always had been to winston getting "The book".

Hey everyone!
All i have really done so far is look for page numbers! If you need any on the use of torture look on pages 202-208, 212, and 233-235! Some of those could probably fall into different categories too! I hope that helps! Most of those are after Winston is arrested!

i found a form of mind control where they use an electric shock therapy to erase the memory where you could tell the person anything and they would believe you.

Hey everybody!
Pages that helped me to find propaganda quotes were pg. 1-2. If you are talking about torture being a part of mind control pages 243-256 and page 283. Pages 243-256is the part where O'brien is torturing Winston to get him to stop going against the party. Page 283 is where Winston is taken into Room 101. I hope these will help!

There are some good quotes on page 17 and page 232!
Examples of Propoganda in 1984 are on pages: 1-2, 11-12 and 232. These include signs, speeches and pictures.

One idea how 1984 used mind control is that they used torture to people who thought differently or outside the box. Examples can be found in Book 3 when O'Brien tortured Winston.

keeping people in a state of fear can influence their actions and I think that could help constitute as a form of mind control
things about the thought police and the like are shown in the book as a constant shadow over the people and maybe after a while it makes them actually think different. I just called them fear tactics in my paper

In the real world, there is similiar nation, which uses the method that the Party used for the mind control, and the name of the nation is North Korea. According to the knowlege I learned about North Korea's mind control, North Korea's leader, Kim Jong-il, and the government torture the people who have any connection or try to connection to South Korea or other capitalism countries, such as US and Japan. North Koreans believed the Kim's house had made the North Korea strong and great, because they have been educated like brainwashing and without other knowledge except what the government have teached. Just refer the Wikipdia pages http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kim_Jong-il and Mind Control articles.

I think that one major source of mind control is obviously Goldstein's book. Although it was eventually revealed that it wasn't ACTUALLY by Goldstein (without even the debate of his existence being taken into account), i think that it still serves as one of the main sources of influence and mind control over Winston. Not only did it serve to reinforce his misplaced faith in the general population, of which he believed millions were a part of an underground brotherhood, but it also served as a final breakpoint when it was revealed that it was nothing like what he thought, and that O'Brien, as well as many other party members were actually the writers.

I mainly used the book. Some pages that were helpful for me were pg. 232-236. These pages talk about room 101 this was a major source of mind control in this novel.
